Good Touching

It has come to the point I absolutely have to find a chiropractor. I can't even sleep any more. Even after taking sleeping pills, I wake up after only 2 hours sleep from the pain and discomfort. Actually, the discomfort is much more tortuous than the pain.
Since jr. high, I have suffered from slip discs and other back problems. I saw my first chiropractor, a sports chiropractic therapist, when I was 13. Since then, about every 2 years, my back acts up so bad it disrupts my life, I see a chiropractor, I go back to normal for another 2 years. I have not been to one since the fabulous one I had here at Pinnacle Fitness passed. I also have a shoulder injury that was inflicted upon me about 2-3 years ago that is not getting better. Sometimes it stiffens quite badly. When I tried to do archery, it began to hurt so bad I could not lift anything with my right arm.
Here's the thing, chiropractors kind of freak me out. Anyone manipulating my neck has always freaked me out. Last year, I met a girl who has serious nerve damage from a chiropractic mishap. She suffers from what looks like seizures, but they from a problem with the nervous system, not anything in the brain. This has exacerbated my trepidation quite a bit.
I need one. I can't keep going on without sleep. I am just having trouble finding someone to trust.
Any suggestions? Recommendations?
Also, it has been suggested that one can get similar relief with the right kind massage. That the body's muscles can ease vertebrae/discs into place when properly massaged and cared for. Is this true?
p.s. -
I don't have insurance, so long term care is out of the question as are high priced medical facilities.
