A starry sky, a warm breeze, and a creeper
Jun. 1st, 2013 12:18 amI was enjoying a nighttime swim under the palm trees and gazing at the Big Dipper above me. I was trying to ignore that creepy feeling you get when alone at night and trying to enjoy an activity draws the attention away from ones surroundings, when I came up from the water to notice a man standing on the outside of the high security gate around the pool area, staring at me through the bars. He noticed me see him, and seemingly to try to look like he was doing something other than watching me swim, he fidgets a bit and gets out his keys and lets himself into the pool area. He then moseys along the length of the pool patio area, shuffling his feet and taking discrete side glances in my direction. He gets to the end of that length of the pool and takes some time to examine the pool cleaning net hanging on a wall on the far side of the pool area from me. I recognized his dark basketball shorts and Barkley 34 jersey and baseball cap. I had seen this man earlier when walking the dog, walking around the parking area like he was looking for something. ….both times I walked the dog today. I tried to keep swimming and not stare, but still keep an eye on the man who kept looking at me, then getting uncomfortable when he saw me see him look at me. He continued to walk around and disappeared into a dark area behind the bathrooms. When I went under the water and came up again, I saw him standing in the shadows by the restroom looking in my direction again. When he saw me look the direction of his dark silhouette, he shuffled like he couldn't decide which way to walk, walked back the way had come before circling uncomfortably then continued the clockwise circle back towards my direction. He finished walking his circle, checking the fence here and there, glancing at me as I continued to try to swim while keeping him in my sights. He finally, after what seemed a long, uncomfortable time, made it back to the gate he entered through and exited. He lingered a bit around the area before seeming to go into a condo whose front faces the pool. He opened the security gate of the condo, and it shut, but I could not see if he went in the building or not. No lights came on in the condo. I thought about staying longer in the pool, but I could only picture him standing at one of the dark windows continuing to watch me, so I decided to get out and go back. When I went to the lounge chair to gather up my things, I noticed on the chair 2 chairs down from mine, a crowbar I did not notice when I passed up that chair for the one I chose to put my stuff. Random crowbar at a darkened pool at night. If I knew the number for grounds keeping or anything, I would call them, but I do not. I also noticed how clumsy and difficult it was to unlock the gate with the key, which is necessary to exit, while holding my stuff and lifting the latch at the top of the gate. Had I found a need to leave the pool area in a hurry, I would have had quite some trouble.
A lovely night in the warm desert air, under a starry sky, cut short and ruined by a creeper. This is why we can't have nice alone time.
