I think it is important for SF-ers to acknowledge the violent crime in SF. The city is good at keeping such things quiet and a lot of SF-ers are good at going around in a bubble of denial. SFGAte has made an interactive map of last years homicides. Now,they should just add another map for non-lethal violent crimes.

On the bright side - it looks like I live in the least lethal area of SF.

Murder is hardly ever on the front page.
They mark off crime scenes in a quiet, low profile manner. And they do not leave them marked off for long. Only a couple of hours, where other places I have lived, they would be up for Any hours, even days.
They do not flyer or canvas areas for information or warnings. There was a possible serial attacker who May have killed a victim or two in the Mission, and no one knew about it. I only learned of it from my sexual violence class.
When I lived on Post and Larkin, people on my block were murdered and I only heard about it from Adam (cop Adam).
And I rarely meet anyone who knows that several girls have been recently raped by van drivers. No PSA's telling people to be careful.

I don't think that a bunch of cop cars with lights flashing and yellow "Crime Scene" tape quiet or low profile. I'd say thats pretty damn obvious.

As for it only being a crime scene for a couple hours, it doesn't take days to process a crime scene. Also, to keep a crime scene un-tanted they would have to post a cop there 24 hours a day to make sure nobody messes with the scene. SFPD doesn't have the man power to do that.

They do canvas areas, just because you haven't been asked doesn't mean they don't. Also, if they flyer'd that would insite public panic, which is never good and often causes more problems then it solves. Like when the Zodiac killer was running around... multiple people were beaten by angry mobs who suspected that person was the killer, people stopped going out in fear for their lives etc, when the odds of being killed were extremely low. Fear is a powerful thing and can easily get out of control.

The cabby rapes are old news. I first heard about them almost a year ago. Also, what kind of PSA would you expect? "Hey, use common sense and be careful, there are cabby rapists out there". Don't think that would go over very well.

Actually, I was working on ways to inform people about cab safety with one of my teachers. Like the posters and post cards they have around clubs now, like the one with the guy who has his hand on the girls leather mini-skirt that says "Don't kid yourself, he is not admiring your outfit" or the safe sex info. Same thing. In Dallas, when ever we would put a girl in a cab alone leaving the clubs, we would log the cab # and time in a log book we kept. After a particularly crazy A+ (Asian night) party at Entros, I suggested such, people thought I was nuts to be concerned. Then the Bubbles Lounge incident occcured. People I bring it up to still do not know that it is even a possibility.
The Son of Sam incident was a bit different from the handling of Serial Killer instances today. They knew so much less. It was more in line of how they handle school shootings these days. The "Be afraid of all who are different and wear trench coats" method.
I know from talking to few city social workers and Trauma nurses that this city actually has policies for keeping things quiet, as to not spook tourism away.
But mostly, I am tired of trying to convince people that it is not a good idea to walk around certain areas at certain times in states of expensive dress or undress especially when drunk or distracted, because, yes, crime does happen here to bystanders. I have had many conversations with people who refuse to believe violent crime happens to every day people not already with criminal ties. Other than rape, and they "know not to get in a strangers van."

These are provided by the city, and will give you maps of reported crimes all over the city. They're kinda cool.
